An upscale hotel and wedding venue nestled at the base of Blue Ridge Mountains in South Carolina features luxurious rooms and suites on the hotel’s inside that are matched with equally picturesque views. It is the perfect location for large outdoor events and weddings.
The courtyard at the hotel is one of the biggest draws as it showcases a central reflecting pool and fountain area surrounded by an exposed aggregate patio. The engineering and design services firm assigned to the project was called in to redo the patio area, which included coming up with a solution for managing stormwater. There was a need for an extremely discreet drainage solution – one that provided a heel proof channel since the area often had people roaming about for weddings and special events in formal party attire. The remodel also required the removal of all the old drainage as well as a resurfacing of the courtyard patio area.

NDS Products Used
The engineering firm contacted NDS for design help and product recommendations, specifically for products consistent with the upscale, unique venue and fixtures. Because NDS offers a number of different solutions, the Design Worx® team determined the most appropriate remedy was a combination of two different stormwater management products.
The first product was Dura Slope® channel drains around the patio’s perimeter, using low-profile slot top grates that provide a sleek, understated appearance. Their safety and flexibility make them an ideal solution since the discreet ½ in. slot with integrated rail is heelproof and ADA compliant.
The second product NDS recommended was a set of Mini™ channel drains with exposed, elegantly designed brass grates to compliment the aesthetics of the surrounding hardscape. NDS’s Mini channel drains are just over 3 in. wide and feature a patented design that provides load bearing support from both sides and underneath.
The construction company brought onboard had to remove the old drainage system as well as resurface the entire patio so there were unanticipated challenges that arose in the reconstruction. An NDS specification manager was present every step of the way to ensure product availability and appropriate placement of the channels.
Even though NDS products are designed for easy installation, NDS still had a stormwater expert onsite to ensure the best outcome possible. This was particularly important as the construction team, while familiar with installing channel drain, had not previously worked with slot top grates.
"Dura Slope is one of the fastest growing of our trench drain line. Once customers find it and use it, they continue to use it because they realize it does a fantastic job of draining water while being almost undetectable. Plus it comes in both stainless and galvanized steel."
