A city apartment complex located in the heart of San Diego was in need of a water management remedy. The ideal solution would need to be capable of capturing rain fall that was accumulating next to the foundation from a slope just to the east of one of its buildings. However, with the units close together, it was important for NDS to not only come up with a solution, but to use a product that would be easy to transport by foot since space was limited.
The NDS Design Worx® team determined the best approach for capturing and conveying the flow of stormwater was toward the north, away from the building’s foundation. The remedy was to implement a channel drain system since it’s ideal for sheet flow, especially in a constrained area. NDS Dura Slope® channel drains quickly became the go-to solution for easy specifying, thanks to its design versatility.
The Dura Slope channel drain is configured with a built-in slope, allowing the team to ensure positive stormwater drainage in the desired direction. It’s a durable product, yet deceptively lightweight since it comes in 4 ft. channels – enabling the construction team to carry and install it efficiently, even in tight spaces.

An additional benefit is that the Dura Slope channel drain is supplied with temporary blank grates to prevent debris from entering the channel during the concrete pour, which eliminates the need for additional labor onsite – such as cutting plywood or extensive grate taping. For this project, a concrete pump was used to encase the Dura Slope channel drain. The construction company appreciated the rebar clips molded right into the product’s design and the blank grate inserts, which made installation much easier and quicker than other products on the market.
The Design Worx team provided the specifier with important design specifications to complement the final plans, as well as built a comprehensive layout and parts list. This service ultimately helped streamline the job – ensuring the right product was utilized and reducing the possibility of errors. In addition, project distribution to the site was seamless, and installation proceeded on schedule without delay.
"The product was readily available, and the installation went in without a hitch."
